Journaling While Travelling – Giving Yourself Time To Think
Travelling offers more than the chance to see new places. It also gives us something that is often missing in everyday life – time to reflect, time to reassess. Away from work, routines, phones and the constant pressure to keep moving, we can connect more to our inner thoughts.
Keeping a journal while travelling can be one of the most valuable things you do. It doesn't have to be perfect or even make sense. Some days you might write about the places you've visited, while other days you may simply write about how you're feeling. Often it is these quiet reflections that become the most meaningful.
Many of us spend our lives staying busy or distracted. When difficult emotions arise, it is easy to push them aside by working harder, scrolling on our phones or filling every spare moment with something to do. Travelling often removes many of those distractions. At first this can feel uncomfortable, but it also creates an opportunity to notice what is beneath the surface.
Rather than trying to analyse every feeling, allow it to be there. Emotions are meant to move through us, not stay trapped inside us. Writing them down can help us acknowledge them without judgement. Sometimes the answers we're searching for don't come from thinking harder—they come from creating enough downtime for them to appear, and be processed or even acknowledged perhaps for the first time.
I've found that some of my biggest personal insights have come while travelling. With space to reflect, priorities become clearer, old patterns become easier to recognise, and we often return home with a different perspective on what really matters.
Whether you're overseas or simply taking a weekend away, consider bringing a notebook. You may come home with more than memories and photographs—you may come home knowing yourself a little better. Have revelations, new plans, new ideas and new approaches that can be incorporated into your life moving forward.
In sharing one of my reflections: " It is learning how to live intentionally, NOT rushing as much through life. Slowing down and enjoying the simple things in life and savouring the connections with the special people in our lives."
Travel is not just travel; it can be life-changing.
